Singapore Tamil Youths' Club

பேரசிரியர் அ. வீரமணி
Professor A. Veeramani

The STYC has completed its 60 years of its contributions amidst many historical changes in the wider Singapore society. It was conceived in the 1950s by youths who felt that the locally born and educated youths could not find a meaningful role in the many dynamic social and political events taking place in Singapore. Since then, it has undergone many transformations to remain as a viable organisation for Tamil youths.

This volume commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the Singapore Tamil Youths’ Club 1957 - 2017. As an organisation primarily led by youths below the age of forty years of age, it has constantly struggled to reinvent itself as generations of youths moved on in life to become adults and often withdrew from active public life. Though having supported the organisation as a broadcaster (1971-1973) and later as a journalist (1975-1982) and an academic (1974 onwards), I became its active adviser (from 1987) to a group of youths who took over its leadership at my behest. In preparing this commemorative volume, in order to be fair in promoting all the youths who had played various roles, I decided against writing its history from an academic perspective.
